Originaire de Louisville (Kentucky), Lionel Hampton s'est imposé comme l'un des géants du jazz, à la fois chef d'orchestre, vibraphoniste, percussionniste, batteur et pianiste. Il accède à une renommée internationale en 1936 en rejoignant l'orchestre de Benny Goodman, avant de collaborer avec des légendes telles que Louis Armstrong, Oscar Peterson ou Stan Getz. Soliste virtuose, Hampton a marqué aussi bien le Swing, le Bebop que le Soul Jazz moderne.
