La chanteuse américaine Dinah Washington (1924-1963) était un phénomène. Comme aucun de ses collègues, elle a pu se présenter de façon impressionnante comme une chanteuse de blues, de pop et de jazz. Tout a commencé dans le chœur de l'église. À seulement dix-huit ans, la chanteuse baptisée Ruth Lee Jones, déjà active en tant que musicien professionnel, est passée de Gospel à Jazz. De 1943 à 1944, elle travaille dans la bande populaire de Lionel Hampton. Elle a eu ses premiers succès de carte en 1950 avec «je veux être aimé» et en 1954 avec «Apprends-moi ce soir». Dans l'ère LP suivante, elle a travaillé avec les meilleurs orchestres dirigés par Quincy Jones ("The Swinging Miss D") et Hal Mooney. Ses enregistrements avec des ensembles de jazz plus petits tels que "Dinah Jams", qui a présenté les meilleurs trompettistes comme Clark Terry, Maynard Ferguson et Clifford Brown, étaient tout aussi remarquables.
