Coleman Hawkins, surnommé "Hawk" ou "Bean", est connu comme le père du sax et il était l'un des solistes les plus influents à cet instrument. Dix-sept albums originaux de ses années «hardbop». «J'ai appris à jouer des ballades en écoutant Hawk» (Miles Davis). Le saxophoniste ténor Coleman "The Hawk" Hawkins (11904-1969) était l'un des plus importants et réputé instrumentistes de jazz. Le «père du saxophone» a conquis cet instrument jusqu'alors impopulaire pour le jazz et a influencé les générations à venir. Il avait une forte personnalité, une grande présence et une énorme curiosité musicale, de sorte qu'il est resté stylistiquement à jour dans les diverses époques qui se sont suivies jusqu'au moins dans les années 1960.
